Second Day and Counting

By juliankaruk

I met with my “apprentices” today, Gabe Montgomery and Emilio Tripp, and the new Karuk language program manager, Ruth Rouvier. After futzing with equipment and deciding on a direction for the near term we’ve decided to create an audio accompaniment for the Now You’re Speaking–Karuk! booklet.

We’ll see how it goes seeing as the words and expressions are not organized according to degree of difficulty. So you can learn a fairly simple word or expression followed by a major tongue-twister. Gabe Montgomery was really struggling with the expression itxâarihva kari. He’s got a lot of determination to learn the language and finally pronounced it correctly. He drove away saying, “Time to wake up. Time to wake up. Time to wake up.”, in his own language.

It was a nice sight.
